Why Is My Driveway Going Black?
Black marks on paving are usually growth, not dirt.

The short answer
Black and green marks on paving are most often algae, moss and lichen growing on damp, shaded surfaces. Oil, rubber and general dirt can also darken a drive. The right treatment depends on which it is.
Common causes
- Algae and moss on damp, shaded paving
- Lichen on older surfaces
- Oil and fuel drips from vehicles
- Tyre marks and general dirt
- Weathering of the surface itself
What can be done
Growth and dirt usually respond well to cleaning. Oil and some deep stains are harder, and we tell you honestly what to expect after we see the surface.
After cleaning
Block paving may need re-sanding afterwards, and a treatment can slow regrowth, though it may return.
Questions
Will cleaning remove oil stains?
Some marks come out and some do not. We say what is realistic after we have seen the surface.
Is it safe to use bleach?
We avoid guessing. We use treatments chosen for the surface and explain them.
Can you clean tarmac?
Please ask and send a photo. The approach depends on the surface.
