Block Paving: Cleaning vs Re-sanding

A clean drive is only half the job. The sand between the blocks matters too.

Block Paving: Cleaning vs Re-sanding by Your House Wash

The short answer

Cleaning removes dirt, algae and weeds from the surface. Re-sanding replaces the sand in the joints, which helps hold the blocks together and discourages weeds. Many drives benefit from both, and we will say what yours needs.

What cleaning does

Cleaning lifts dirt, algae, moss and staining from the surface of the blocks. It also removes sand from the joints, which is why re-sanding is usually part of the picture afterwards.

What re-sanding does

Sand fills the gaps between blocks. It helps keep the paving stable and makes it harder for weeds to take hold. After a clean, new sand is brushed into the joints.

What neither can do

Neither fixes sunken, loose or damaged blocks. Those are repair jobs. We can tell you if we spot any when we look.

Weeds and weed treatment

Weed treatment is a separate service to a full clean. Some customers do a clean and re-sand, then add a treatment visit.

Questions

Do I need to re-sand after cleaning?

Often, yes, because cleaning removes sand from the joints. We will say what we recommend for your drive.

Will the weeds come back?

They can. We do not promise a permanent weed-free surface.

Can you repair sunken blocks?

Please ask. Repairs are a different job to cleaning, and we will be clear about what is included in your quote.
