Does Moss on Your Roof Matter?

A bit of green does not always mean a problem. Here is when moss is worth dealing with.

Does Roof Moss Matter? by Your House Wash

The short answer

Moss holds moisture against the roof and can block gutters when it falls. It is not always urgent, but heavy growth is worth having looked at.

Why moss can be a problem

  • It holds water against tiles
  • It can lift or push at tile edges as it builds up
  • It washes into gutters and can block them
  • It spoils the look of the house

When to get it looked at

If moss is thick, spreading, or you notice blocked gutters or damp near the roofline, it is worth getting someone to look. A roofer should be asked about any damaged or slipped tiles, which are a repair matter rather than a cleaning one.

What cleaning does and does not do

Cleaning takes the moss off and treats the surface. It does not repair damaged tiles, and it cannot promise that growth will not return.
