How Often Should Gutters Be Cleared?

There is no single answer, because it depends on the trees, the roof and the weather around your house.

How Often Should Gutters Be Cleared? by Your House Wash

The short answer

Many homes need their gutters checked at least once a year, often after leaves fall. Houses near trees, or with low-pitched roofs and a lot of debris, may need it more often.

What blocks gutters

  • Leaves and twigs from nearby trees
  • Moss washed down from the roof
  • Roof granules and general debris
  • Seeds and small plants that take root in the silt

Signs your gutters need attention

Water spilling over the edge in rain, stained or damp patches on the walls below, plants growing from the gutter, or sagging sections can all point to a blockage. A gutter that overflows regularly is worth looking at.

Gutter clearance and roofline washing

Clearing the inside of the gutters is a different job from washing the outside of the gutters, fascias and soffits. Many customers combine them, or have them done with a roof clean. We will explain which you need.

Questions

Do you clear gutters from the ground or ladders?

We will explain the method for your property when we quote, because access and the height of the building affect it.

Is gutter clearance the same as cleaning the outside?

No. Clearing removes debris from inside the gutter. Washing cleans the outside of the gutters, fascias and soffits. We can do either or both.

Can you clear gutters with a roof clean?

Yes, they are often done together.
